Students who spend a day with me in a workshop, go Students who spend a day with me in a workshop, go through the whole flow of measuring up artwork. They then move through the steps of cutting mounts, the frame, glass and so on. We keep to a reasonable size piece of art, so that we can practice concepts and techniques.
Sometimes they want to focus on some aspects of framing.Take this piece. This was part of a collection of stretched canvases which my student was interested in framing. She was interested in the impact of a frame. We worked with raw wood. First measuring, cutting and joint the frame, then moving on to joining the lengths.
Once the frame is made we moved on to preparing it for a finish.
Typically I do these finishing stages over a succession of days, so in one day we stuck to a single shade. With more time you can layer up the tones and shades.
Even so, the hand painted and varnished frame lends great impact to the piece.#handfinished

A little about more about learning new skills. My A little about more about learning new skills. My preference is in-person group sessions.
I go to French once a week. In the group we have to speak aloud (it doesn’t sound quite the same as when I say it in my head! )I’ve been to an excellent mosaic class and plan to again.
It’s definitely nice working in the group. You work alone but learn collectively. But if you live somewhere remote, or you can’t make in-person classes, then the internet has everything you need. So watching videos and learning remotely is a real option. The happy balance? Well it’s being live and online!!
The Confident Picture Framer is just that. Join live sessions, bring your questions and work with a group. Online. You can book today and join us as we start on on Tuesday.#onlineworkshop

When it comes to planning and design, framers can When it comes to planning and design, framers can overwhelm customers with choices. It’s important to have the conversation with your client to find out:- who this is for ?
- where it’s going to go ?
- the colour preferences or ideas the customer may come with. These are my cards, so I can have fun with them. I’m looking forward to framing them.I’m using them here as an example of how many choices we have when we’re framing a piece and the impact these choices have on it.Do you want subtle or bold? Why do people come to framing classes? When I inv Why do people come to framing classes? When I invite people to spend a day framing I offer three reasons
1. as a fun day out
2. To frame pieces for their homes
3. To start or expand their framing businessInterestingly, the reasons they come are
often cost related. Because many of us have a lot of pieces to frame, many opt for learning to frame to save money.Whatever your reason, you may be surprised at what fun it can be.Ever thought if framing? What are your reasons ?#learningtoframe

Measuring, measuring, measuring…You may have hea Measuring, measuring, measuring…You may have heard the old adage “measure twice, cut once”. And it’s true, we all make mistakes and careful planning and calculations go a long way to saving time and materials. This is not the measuring I’m talking about. As a framer, much like a photographer, we can control what is seen in the frame by careful planning. A square image doesn’t need to be framed as a square.I have a clear memory of a student years ago who was framing his own photo. It was a portrait view of a city scene. He decided to crop the aperture to a square scene. It had a very strong result. What fun. All that and he didn’t cut the artwork!Measuring and planning is something experienced framers do almost without thinking. I’ve seen my novice framers sometimes struggle to get their heads around the numbers. Is that you?Join me in Feb. I have a mini boot camp on getting started.

Chop service!!Unwrapping chop to get started on Chop service!!Unwrapping chop to get started on a frosty morning!
I can give you at least half a dozen reasons why I use chop service and perhaps another 1/2 why I should but don’t ! I know of a few framers who have moved to only chop. What about you? Do you do half chop and order lengths for the rest?
Do you only use chop, and why so?Perhaps you’re like I was and you think it’s more expensive to go chop. I’m still going through the process and order a mix, but I’m a real advocate of chop.Do you think it’s “cheating “?In this video I’m unwrapping a chop from @lionpfs#framers

To use Chop or to Cut?? A much debated topic among To use Chop or to Cut?? A much debated topic among some framers, a “no-brainer “ for others. What’s the problem? On the surface Chop is more expensive. This is when the suppliers cut the wood for you and send you the lengths to join to make the frame. And… it is more expensive to do that. But…if you have to order 3m and only need 2m, you pay for an extra 1m, which takes up workshop space and you’re unlikely to use it. So it’s wasting energy, it messes with your head(!) and you’re not saving in the long run.
I tell my students who starting their own businesses, “use chop” and yet here I am today, cutting my own wood. Why is that? It’s a big order. I’ve ordered a lot of wood, and I can do the math(s) to make sure I use it all well. Besides I love cutting, so every now and then I do my own chop.If you’re starting out, and you’re buying all the equipment, you can delay your wood cutting equipment for a while and start on chop. When you buy your Morso, you may love it. Be warned. 😊#morso

As framers, we encounter a wide variety of project As framers, we encounter a wide variety of projects. Fabrics, objects, drawings,…and canvases. Quite often my clients bring in a rolled up canvas from a holiday (in distant lands). It’s a sensible way to bring art home, because a rolled canvas generally fits easily into your luggage. The question is, do we stretch and then frame, or just stretch it? That’s another discussion, but they need to be stretched.I stretch a lot of canvases and have a few staple guns for the purpose.Sometimes I have a lot to do in one go, so I’ve been thinking of how to make things easier.
I don’t have a compressor in my workshop (yet!), so that’s not a solution. Framers with a compressor plug quite a few of their tools into this. The compressed air makes many tasks more efficient. At a recent trip to @lionpfs , one of the techs said “go cordless “. Of course. Brilliant! I have a cordless screwdriver, which is great.
I’m delighted with my new toy.Do you have cordless (battery operated) tools in your workshop? What would you recommend I try next?#bespokepictureframing
